First Grade News...First Grade 2008 -- 2009

Thank you to all of the grandparents and parents who joined us for lunch last week. It was great to have you be our guest!

This Week:
In Reading / Language Arts, we are finishing up Theme 1. We are continuing to work on letters and letter sounds. We will begin to read short “i” words. When reading a story, be sure to ask your child what happened at the beginning, middle, and end of the story. Please practice the following high-frequency words this week: a, find, have, one, to, and who. We will have a test on Friday. We have not started our spelling word list. This should begin in a couple of weeks.

In Math, we are beginning Chapter 3—Addition Strategies. This chapter focuses on thinking about addition in different ways. Practice math addition facts to 10 at home this week. Some important vocabulary we are learning is: count on and doubles.

In Social Studies, we are learning about weather and seasons. We will be discussing various types of weather and the four seasons in the year. We will also learn how to measure and record weather data. The students will become familiar with the different types of clouds.

September 11-12—Parent Conferences and early release days.

Money:
You can pay for your child’s meals at www.mealpay.com or send money with your child to school. If you choose to send money for lunch or something else with your child, please place it in an envelope with a note stating what the money should be used for.

Snacks:
We are in need of snacks for our classroom. Our students love a mid-morning break. We have 21 students in our classrooms.

Ice Cream:
Our school sells ice cream on Fridays. The cost is 75¢. The money must be put in an envelope or small ziplock bag with the student’s name on it. Please explain to your child that ice cream on Friday is a privilege for our students. If they have moved their clip to any color other than black or blue for more than two days, they will not be allowed to purchase ice cream. Also, the cafeteria will not allow them to purchase ice cream if they have a negative balance in their account.

As always, thanks for all of your support and hard work!
