Alcovy High School media specialist, May Xiong has been named South Metro District Library Media Specialist of the Year by the Georgia Library Media Association! With this honor, Ms. Xiong is now entered into the competition for the Georgia Library Media Specialist of the Year Award, which recognizes a K-12 library media specialist whose services have resulted in exemplary library media programs. Xiong was selected to serve as Newton County School System’s Media Specialist of the Year in March 2014.

“It is an honor to be the recipient of the South Metro District Media Specialist of the Year award,” said Xiong. “This is the culmination of the dedication and efforts of all media specialists in Newton County to provide information technology to all students and staff.  We strive to create an engaged learning community and empower students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, and lifelong learners.”

“Mrs. Xiong has been a Media Specialist at Alcovy since it opened in 2006,” said Dr. Gary Shattuck, NCSS Director of Technology and Media Services. “She has done a fabulous job building her collection and promoting information literacy at Alcovy over the years. She was one the earliest media specialists to take part in the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl and has won the local high school division five out of the last six years. In 2009, her team advanced to the state semi-finals losing only to the eventual state champions. Mrs. Xiong has done a great job mentoring new Media Specialists. Her contribution to the Media Program at Newton County Schools is immeasurable.”

Xiong will be honored at the Library Media Specialist of the Year Awards Luncheon on Friday, November 7. The statewide Georgia Library Media Specialist of the Year winner will be announced during the luncheon.
