FFA teams from Alcovy High School, Eastside High School, and Newton High School recently competed at the North Region FFA Meats CDE (Career Development Event) at the University of Georgia Meat Science Facility in Athens. The students were coached by Beth Galloway, Newton College and Career Academy Animal Science teacher and Newton County FFA Advisor. Students learned eighty different types of meat cuts from beef, pork, and lamb.  They also learned how to place classes of cuts of meat.

Mrs. Galloway was assisted by Daniel Leinweber, butcher at The Meat House. The students took an after school trip to The Meat House where Mr. Leinweber went over cuts of meat and the primal areas of the species.  Students that competed were from Alcovy: Mary White, Tommy Huntsinger, Jordan Wilbanks, and Rachel Harrison; Eastside High School: Dalton Spivey, Josey Hilty, Zack Spivey, and Jack Weesner; Newton High School: Brandon Burton and Tyler Cleary. All the teams placed in the top 10 for the region and plan on building on their knowledge for next year’s competition!
