Mason Garrett of Newton County Theme School has reason to smile. In addition to winning 1st Place at the Regional Science Fair, his project also won both the Broadcom Masters Award and the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA), Atlanta Chapter Award!

Newton County School System middle and high school students brought home numerous awards in the recent Griffin RESA Regional Science Fair. Overall,  eleven projects earned first place awards, nine projects received second place awards and seven projects won third place awards.  All students winning first place awards will move on to the Georgia Science and Engineering Fair at the University of Georgia in March.

In addition to winning a first place award, Mason Garrett of Newton County Theme School at Ficquett also won both the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA, Atlanta Chapter Award and the Broadcom Masters Award. Ken Nguyen of Cousins Middle School took home second place honors in addition to the Pat Phillips Memorial Fund Award.

Newton County School System’s students competed against students from Fayette, Henry, Griffin-Spalding, Butts, Pike, Lamar, and Thomaston Upson county schools.

“Science is extremely important in this modern age we live in,” said Samantha Fuhrey, Superintendent of Newton County Schools. “I am so proud to see so many of our students not only enter the regional science fair, but perform so exceedingly well!  What a fabulous job by not only our students but also their teachers! It’s a job truly well-done! I wish those moving on to the state competition the very best of luck. I know they will represent their schools and our school system well!”
