Newton County School System is pleased to announce that both Cousins Middle School and Alcovy High School won first place at the recent regional Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl held at Clayton State University!

Members of the Alcovy High School Reading Bowl team include: Elysia Baker, Elizabeth Baker, Allison Ballew, Katie Bryans, Baylee Friedman, Chelsea Grant, Tapaija Hill, Hannah Maddux, and Bryce Moncrief. The Cousins Middle School Reading Bowl team included: Raven Branch, Jonathan Bradley, Bryce Freeman, Jada Harrison, D’Mari Jones, Joyce Li, Kyra Lovejoy, and Noah Whitehead.

Students at the elementary and middle school levels read books from the 2014 – 2015 Georgia Children’s Book Award nominee list while high school students read nominated books from the 2014-2015 Georgia Peach Book Award for Teen Readers list. Students spend hundreds of hours reading, creating questions, taking quizzes, studying, and attending meetings and practices in preparation for the county and regional reading bowls.

Alcovy and Cousins along with Flint Hill Elementary participated in the regional bowl after winning first place in their school level at the NCSS Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl held in January. Mansfield Elementary, Indian Creek Middle, and the Newton College & Career Academy placed second in the NCSS Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl and also had the opportunity to compete at the regional bowl.

“I am very proud of all of our students who participated in the NCSS Helen Reading Bowl this year,” said Dr. Gary Shattuck, Director of Technology and Media Services for Newton County Schools. “These students have embraced an extra-curricular activity that fosters literacy and competition. The teams that moved on to compete at the regional bowl did an outstanding job and truly represented Newton County Schools well. We are already looking forward to next year’s Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl.”
