Indian Creek Middle School is the recipient of an Action for Healthy Kids School Grants for Healthy Kids for the amount of $1,750.00.  The grant funds will be used to help implement a Grab and Go breakfast kiosk for students beginning this fall.

According to Susan Stone, NCSS School Nutrition Coordinator, Indian Creek students will be able to pick up a complete breakfast from School Nutrition on their way to class beginning in October.  The menu will feature grab and go items from the traditional breakfast menu such as Chicken Biscuits, French Toast Sticks, and Yogurt Parfaits.  A selection of fruit, fruit juice, and milk will also be available on the kiosk.  Students will still have the option of selecting and eating breakfast in the cafeteria, where items such as grits and brown sugar oatmeal are served.  The School Nutrition Program’s menu features whole grain biscuits, fresh fruits, and both fat-free and 1% milk.

“Studies show that students’ overall dietary health and nutrient intake are positively affected by breakfast consumption, particularly meals provided through the School Nutrition Program,” said Stone. “Schools also experience improvements in test scores as student consumption of school breakfast increases.”

According to a study published in the journal, “Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine," students who increased their participation in school breakfast programs had significantly higher math scores than students who skipped or rarely ate breakfast.
