Congratulations are in order as students in the Newton High School Drama Program earned state recognition recently in the Georgia High School Musical Awards, also known as The Shuler Hensley Awards. Newton High School competed with over fifty high schools from across the state in “The Song of Hope” contest, sponsored by the Georgia Lottery.

Each school was required to create and submit an original music video including an original song inspired by the theme of “hope.” According to Newton High School drama director, Tawana Parker-Bellamy, the video was to represent what “hope” meant to the students and their school.  The Newton team, consisting of now Class of 2015 graduates Jaylon Aaron and Anthony Glover, and current junior Nyadirah Stephens, joined forces last spring to not only write and produce but also perform in their own video.

Local NBC affiliate, WSB-TV, broadcast The Shuler Hensley Awards on August 22, 2015. During the show it was announced that Newton High School won the 6th place award and also received a $500.00 prize for the school drama program.

“We are so proud of the work and dedication of the Newton High School drama students,” said Bellamy. “The motivation and talent that these students have displayed this year is inspiring, and to have it recognized is truly a great feeling.  We hope that they continue to do great things for the department and in their future endeavors.”

"I echo Ms. Bellamy's sentiment of how proud we are of these students' accomplishment,” said John Ellenberg, principal of Newton High School. “It is wonderful to see them use their time and talents to create and convey a message that so many need to hear."
