Newton County School System high school students receiving free or reduced meal benefits have the opportunity to apply for a low-cost, refurbished computer and accessories thanks to the Newton College & Career Academy’s (NCCA) Desktops 4 Ed program. NCCA student associates enrolled in the Computer Systems Repair Pathway refurbished the computers in the summer with plans for a November distribution to students in need. Fifty computers are currently available and will be awarded through a lottery process.

According to Jill McGiboney, NCCA Work Based Learning and EBI Support, students will receive a complete computer setup.   Each desktop computer includes one CPU with Intel Core 2Duo processor, a minimum of 2GB of RAM, minimum 80GB hard drive, and Vista operating system. Also included in the package are a keyboard, mouse, LCD monitor, and all necessary cables.

Interested students can apply online as the link to the application is posted at the bottom of this page. It is also posted on the NCCA homepage at Only NCSS high school students receiving free or reduced meal benefits are eligible.

Students selected in the lottery will be notified and required to attend, along with their parents/guardians, a mandatory one-hour training class in November, at the Newton College & Career Academy prior to receiving the computer system.

“We require the training session to ensure that the family knows how to set up and use the computer properly,” said McGiboney. “We want to make sure everyone walks away knowing how to not only hook the desktop, monitor, keyboard and mouse together but also how to actually turn the computer on and use the system.”

McGiboney added, “A $25.00 cash, non-refundable processing fee, is required at that time.”

All computers are sold as-is with no warranty. The deadline to apply is October 30th, 2015.
