Newton County School Superintendent Samantha Fuhrey has initiated a “Superintendent’s Coin of Distinction” program to recognize individuals who make the “ordinary” extraordinary.  Recipients of the “Coin of Distinction” are those individuals who feel it is their responsibility to go above and beyond in all they do; they give 150% every day.

Ms. Fuhrey recently awarded the “Superintendent’s Coin of Distinction” to personnel in the NCSS Transportation Department for their dedication to the students in their charge. The “Coin of Distinction” was recently presented to bus driver Deborah Gousha and trainer Robin Ewing-Hill after receiving a complimentary email from a citizen who witnessed them going above and beyond to take care of students waiting for the bus.  She also presented her “Coin of Distinction” to Executive Director of Support Services, Mike Barr; Zone Supervisor, David Flanigan; School Bus Safety and Training Supervisor, Jake Davis; Bus Driver, Edwin Butcher; and Zone Supervisor, John O'Brien, who jumped into action when a student was reported as missing. They knocked on doors, offered assistance to the family and law enforcement, and waited in the cold for several hours for word about the missing child.

“I am extremely proud of the recipients of the ‘Coin of Distinction’,” said Fuhrey. “It is a testament to the commitment each individual has demonstrated; they truly bring to life our school system’s motto—‘Spirit, Pride, and Excellence.’ They are outstanding employees, and I’m honored to present each of them with a ‘Coin of Distinction.’ I look forward to recognizing other employees for their distinguished service.”
