Newton County School System students receiving free or reduced lunch benefits have the opportunity to apply for a low-cost, refurbished computer and accessories thanks to the Newton College & Career Academy’s (NCCA) Desktops 4 Ed program. Twenty desktop computers are currently available and will be awarded through a lottery process only.

According to Jill McGiboney, NCCA Work Based Learning and EBI assistant, students will receive a complete computer setup.   Each desktop computer includes one CPU with Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB RAM, 250GB hard drive, Windows 7 Professional OS.  Also included in the package are a keyboard, mouse, mouse pad, LCD monitor, and all necessary cables.

Interested students can apply online as the application is posted on both the Newton County School System homepage at and the NCCA homepage at Only NCSS students receiving free or reduced lunch benefits are eligible.

Students selected in the lottery will be notified and required to attend, along with their parents/guardians, a mandatory 30-minute mini-training class on May 19th at 6:00pm, at the Newton College & Career Academy prior to receiving the computer system.

“We require the training session to ensure that the family knows how to set up and use the computer properly,” said McGiboney. “We want to make sure everyone walks away knowing how to not only hook the desktop, monitor, keyboard and mouse together but also how to actually turn the computer on and use the system.”

McGiboney added, “A $25.00 cash, non-refundable processing fee, is required at that time.”

All computers are sold as-is with no warranty. The deadline to apply is May 12, 2016.
