Eastside High School is a 2016 Platinum Level Greatest Gains School according to Governor Nathan Deal. The Governor’s Office of Student Achievement (GOSA) recently announced that Eastside High School was one of only six high schools in the state recognized at the Platinum Award level. Buford; Lassiter; McIntosh; Gwinnett School of Math, Science, and Technology; and North Oconee rounded out the list. Eastside jumped to the Platinum Level after earning a Gold Level award the previous year.

“We at Eastside High School are extremely proud to receive this honor,” said EHS Principal Jeff Cher.  “It affirms the hard work and dedication on the part of our faculty and staff to strive for continual growth and achievement for all students.”

The school awards, developed by GOSA and approved by the State Board of Education, are part of Georgia’s Single Statewide Accountability System. Highest Performing schools must earn a three-year average College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) Achievement Score that ranks in at least the 93rd percentile. Greatest Gains schools must earn a three-year average CCRPI Progress Score that ranks in at least the 93rd percentile.   As a Platinum Level Greatest Gains school, Eastside High School’s CCRPI Progress Score ranks in at least the 99th percentile.

“The 2015-2016 school year was a very successful one for our high schools,” said Shannon Buff, Director of Secondary Schools for Newton County School System. “Our high schools had numerous AP Scholars, our SAT and ACT scores increased across the board, and our high school graduates earned millions of dollars in scholarships. And the students and staff at Eastside High School should definitely be congratulated for their accomplishments in 2015-2016. Forty-seven Eastside students qualified as AP Scholars and three of those at the National AP Scholar Award designation. Eastside’s students topped the state on the SAT math and writing exams and both Georgia and the nation on the SAT reading exam. They increased their total composite score on the SAT by 47 points in 2016.”

She added, “Just like the SAT, Eastside’s ACT scores also increased across the board and they outperformed the nation in four categories—English, reading, science, and the composite. They outpaced the state in science, too.  The school just had a phenomenal year and they are very deserving of the Platinum recognition.”

“I am so proud that Eastside has received this statewide recognition; Eastside students’ performance is among the very best in Georgia,” said NCSS Superintendent Samantha Fuhrey! “I know first-hand how hard the teachers, leaders, and students work each day to achieve their goals, and I commend them for continuing to reach higher each year.  A special note of thanks to the Eastside High School parents who ensure their students are focused on learning and striving to be the best.  I look forward to watching the Eastside team continue to receive outstanding accolades.

“I congratulate all of the students, teachers and administrators in Georgia’s award-winning schools who worked tirelessly toward these accomplishments," said Deal.  “The bright minds of Georgia’s students are the state’s most precious resource and I commend the schools that are exceeding expectations in preparing their students for future success.”
