Local author and artist, Brett Brooks, paid a visit to South Salem Elementary School recently to lead a lesson with the third grade class. Brooks, who previously designed merchandise for Disney and now does freelance work, read the students his book, “Why Does the Jack-o-lantern Smile?” and then taught the students how to draw characters for their own book.

“The students really enjoyed the visit,” said Kristen Chastain, third grade teacher at South Salem Elementary School. “It was a great way for our students to gain knowledge and access to a community member who has a job that relates to our students’ daily work in reading and writing.”
