Members of the West Newton Elementary School math team earned themselves a trip to a national math competition in Birmingham, Alabama recently after their outstanding performance in the Statewide Georgia Math Competition.

According to Dr. Tiffany Clay, instructional coach for West Newton Elementary School, the students won first place in the mathematics problem-solving category in the statewide competition and followed that win with another first place finish in the regional competition.

Members of the team included fifth-graders Haleigh Clay, Juan Davis, Jr., Destiny Henderson, and third-graders Cameron Debose, and Demetrius Johnson.

“We obviously have some very smart mathematicians at West Newton Elementary School,” said Samantha Fuhrey, superintendent of Newton County School System. “I’m very proud of the math team for winning both the statewide and regional math competition. What an outstanding accomplishment! The team definitely represented West Newton Elementary School and Newton County School System very well!”
