For the second consecutive year, the Newton High School Marine Corps Junior ROTC (MCJROTC) battalion has placed first at the Rockdale County MCJROTC 6th Annual Field Meet—an annual athletic competition against cadets from Rockdale County School System’s three MCJROTC programs—Heritage, Salem, and Rockdale.

Held at the Earl O'Neal Sports Complex, cadets in the physical competition participated in events including: the 4 x 440 Relay; 10 x 100 Relay; Human Liter Carry Relay; Tug-O-War Pull; Human Wheel Barrel Relay; Dizzy Izzy Relay; Crunches; Uniform Relay; Sandbag Carry Relay; Tire Toss; and Push-Up Relay.

“Newton finished first for the second consecutive year in this annual athletic field meet,” said Rawley Coleman, Chief Warrant Officer-4. “Our cadets did a superb job in representing the program, school and community. Last year was Newton’s first year competing in the competition and 16 cadets represented the program; this year the entire Battalion of Cadets was present and instrumental in representing the program.”

“The MCJROTC continues to be a dominant presence at Newton High and around the community,” said Dr. Craig Lockhart, principal of Newton High School. “This program is another example of the high expectations that are conveyed to Newton High students. We appreciate the talents of MCJROTC faculty, staff, and cadets.”
