Newton County School System students brought home several awards from the recent Regional Literacy Days Poetry Recitation, Ready Writing, and Drama Competition held at Griffin Regional Educational Service Agency (RESA).

In the poetry recitation contests, competitors were judged on a number of criteria, including stage presence, articulation, interpretation, memory and accuracy, and difficulty of the piece.

Morgan Hathorn won first place honors in the fifth-grade competition and Lily Cunniffe brought home third place honors in the fourth-grade competition. Both students attend the Newton County Theme School at Ficquett. In the middle school competition, Marissa Gray of Clements Middle School took home second place honors in the seventh-grade poetry recitation contest.

Newton County School System students also fared well in the Ready Writing Competition in which students are given a writing prompt and one hour to complete an essay. In the elementary division, Ray Holt of East Newton Elementary School placed third in the Ready Writing Contest. Middle school student Gabby Turcotte of Cousins Middle School place second in the seventh-grade competition and Anthony Fiddes of Clements Middle School won top honors in the eighth grade competition.

In addition to the Poetry Recitation and Ready Writing Contest, Newton County School System also had great representation in the Drama Competition, as Newton County Theme School at Ficquett’s Drama Team placed third in the contest. Team members include: Ralph Brown, Isabelle Rogers, Jaylen Simons, Kris Prince, Emily Rose Hamby, Ivana Bugg, Sherri Oladapo, Danielle Lockhart, Seah Odum, and Savannah Miller.

“The Literacy Days Competition provides students with the opportunity to perform and be recognized for their talents through the celebration of the arts,” said Samantha Fuhrey, Superintendent of Newton County Schools. “I am proud of our winners as it takes a tremendous amount of talent and commitment to participate in this type of competition. They represented their schools and our school system very well at the regional competition and we are very proud of them.”
