Mr. Johnny Smith was elected on November 23 to serve the remaining two years of the late Richard Tiede's district one seat. He was reelected in November 2006 for a four-year term.

Mr. Smith grew up in DeKalb County and is a graduate of Georgia Tech and Georgia Banking School at the University of Georgia and The Graduate Banking School of the South at Louisiana State University.

Mr. Smith is Senior Vice-President of Newton Federal Bank in Covington. He is very active in the Covington/Newton County community. He previously served on the Board of Directors of the Newton County Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Smith volunteered numerous hours to work with the school board on its two successful SPLOST referendums. In addition, he is a member and former president of the Rotary Club of Covington. Mr. Smith has also played an active role with the Newton County Recreation Commission and even served as the Chairman of the 2003 Dixie Boys World Series at City Pond Park. He is a graduate of Leadership Newton County and has worked with the Youth Leadership of Newton County for many years.

Mr. Smith and his wife, Judy, a teacher, reside in Mansfield with their two children: Taylor and Maggie. Both Taylor and Maggie are students at Eastside High School.
