BOARD MEMBER QUALIFICATIONS
Date: JANUARY 4, 1999
No person shall be eligible to represent an education district on the Newton County Board of Education unless the following requirements are met:
1. Must be at least 21 years of age.
2. Must have been a resident of the county from which he/she offers as a candidate for at least twelve (12) months immediately preceding the date of election.
3. Must remain a resident of the district from which elected. If he/she moves from district after being elected, the place on the Board shall immediately become vacant.
4. Must not have been convicted of treason against the State, or embezzlement of public funds, malfeasance in office, bribery or larceny, or of a felony involving moral turpitude, punishable by the laws of this state with imprisonment in the penitentiary, unless such persons have been pardoned.
5. Must not be a holder or receiver of public money of this State, or any county thereof, who has refused or failed, when called upon, to account for and pay over such money.
6. Must not be of unsound mind or unfit to charge the duties of the office because of advanced age or bodily infirmity.
7. Must not be the holder of another county office.
8. Must not be the publisher or publisher's agent of school books and must not have a pecuniary interest in the sale of textbooks.
9. Must not be employed by or serving on the governing body of a private educational institution (not applicable to institutions above the high school level).
10. Must not be employed by or serving on the Board of any other public school system.
11. Must not be employed by the State Department of Education.
