DUTIES OF MEMBERS OF THE BOARD

Each member of the Board of Education is a county officer, but such official duties (See ABB) can only be performed in conjunction with the other Board members. The Board functions only as a body and not by virtue of the actions of individual members.
Duties of members of the Newton County Board of Education shall include the following:
1. Attend meetings of the Board, enter into discussion, and vote on items coming before the Board for decision;
2. Recognize that an individual Board member has no authority to bind the Newton County Board of Education or act for the Board except as a member in a convened meeting;
3. Become acquainted with the schools in the school district;
4. Support action of the Board once it is taken;
5. Promote education at every opportunity, especially at civic group meetings, PTA meetings, and school meetings;
6. Refer problems brought to his or her attention to the County School Superintendent for action, interpretation, or submission to the entire Board;
7. Keep informed about educational problems and programs through attendance at educational meetings and through personal study.
