BOARD - SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT RELATIONS
Date: JANUARY 4, 1999

The Superintendent of the Newton County School District shall expect that the Board of Education will:

1. Act in an ethical and responsible manner at all times.

2. Furnish objective counsel and advice.

3. Reserve the administration of the system as his/her responsibility.

4. Support him/her, providing he/she carries out board policy.

5. Evaluate his/her work fairly and impartially on a regular basis.

6. Encourage him/her to participate in educational meetings, seminars, and conferences on a state and national level as time and funds permit.

7. Have an established set of policies to guide him/her in performing his/her role.

8. Keep current with educational trends and participate in in-service activities designed for board members.

9. Follow agendas or expected procedure in Board meetings and be adequately prepared to respond to all questions, issues, and topics.

10. Consider the Superintendent as the professional educator and accept his/her counsel and advice on educational matters.

The Newton County Board of Education shall assume that the Superintendent will:

1. Operate in a fair, open, and ethical manner at all times.

2. Work with Board members on an equal basis and not show undue preference to individual members of the Board.

3. Strictly enforce the policies set forth by the Board and operate within established procedures.

4. Keep the Board fully informed on all matters of its concern.

5. Interpret accurately the needs of the school system to the public.

6. Work toward the improvement of the instructional program and staff relations.

7. Handle unexpected issues, topics, and areas of action at Board meetings, so the Board can have adequate time to respond after being fully advised of all the facts.

8. Operate the system in a fiscally sound manner.

9. Support Board decisions at all times.

10. Ask to be relieved of the contract if unable to perform the job expected.

11. Evaluate the staff on regular basis in a fair and objective manner.

12. Prepare an agenda in a business-like manner to keep Board meetings to a reasonable length.

13. Keep the Board advised of changes, innovations, and trends in education that might be applicable to the system.

14. Function as the chief executive officer.
