Substitute Teach

Substitute employment is an on-call, as-needed basis. Substitute teachers are only required for assignments while school is in session.

NCSS has chosen SubFinder to manage the assignments for our substitute teachers. This is an automated system that is simple to operate and can be accessed by telephone or via the internet. Using a touch-tone telephone keypad you can call in to hear assignments or log on to the SubFinder website to see what is available. Either system will allow you to review and select available jobs. Subfinder will also automatically call you to offer job assignments that fit your preferences.

The requirements for substitute teaching in Newton County are:

  • Clear a background check (requires a $25.00 money order)
  • Complete Application Packet
  • Attend a half-day workshop
  • Complete classroom observation for one full school day at any school within the Newton County School District. Observation verification forms will be provided at the workshop.

Persons holding a current or expired professional teacher certification in any state are exempt from the workshop and one-day classroom observation.

  • A complete application includes all forms to be filled out and signed by applicant.
  • Two Forms of ID, i.e. Social Security Card, and Driver's License. You may also refer to the second page of the I-9 form for a list of documents that are acceptable.
  • Official College Transcripts or a copy of High School Diploma/GED or high school transcript.

When submitting a complete application package, you must include a $25.00 money order made payable to the Newton County Schools for your background check. Only applicants who have a clear background and a complete application package will be permitted to attend the Substitute Workshop. Applications will be available in the Human Resources Department at the Newton County Board of Education.
