Covington, Georgia is located approximately 45 miles east of Atlanta. In the past twenty years, the county has changed from a largely agricultural population to to a suburban/manufacturing area.

While Cousins houses many students (50%) from low socioeconomic families, who receive aid in the form of free and reduced-price lunches, the student body also includes students from middle and upper socioeconomic households, the school population is fairly representative of the community in terms of ethnic diversity; there are approximately sixty-one percent white students, thirty-eight percent black students, and less than one percent of Hispanic, Asian, and Native American students. The county has seen an increase in households with non-English speaking backgrounds. Many of the students (38%) at CMS are from non-traditional families, with a large majority of all students responsible for themselves and/or their siblings immediately before and after school.
