ANNOUNCEMENT OF INTENT TO DESTROY

SPECIAL EDUCATION RECORDS

The Division of Exceptional Students of Newton County Public Schools will destroy records that have been collected, maintained, and/or used in providing special education services.  This activity is in compliance with federal, state and local policy.  The destruction of data policy provides that records may be destroyed when they are no longer needed for educational planning purposes.

 

STUDENTS WHO WILL BE AFFECTED

The destruction policy only applies to SPECIAL EDUCATION STUDENTS BORN in 1986.

 

TO OBTAIN THESE EDUCATIONAL RECORDS

REQUEST FOR RECORDS MUST BE MADE

PRIOR TO JUNE 15, 2013

Contact the Office of Special Education at:  Newton County Public Schools-Board of Education, 2109 Newton Drive, P. O. Box 1269, Covington, GA  30015 or by phone: (770) 787-1330, Ext. 1204.  Records will be provided only to a former student who is 18 years of age or older, or the legal guardian.  We will notify the individual by phone when the requested records are prepared.  The records will be obtained at the Board of Education.  Anyone obtaining records will be required to produce identification that contains both picture and signature.

CONGRATULATIONS TO SKC, INC., THE NCSS 2013 PARTNER OF THE YEAR!

SKC, Inc., has been named the Newton County School System 2013 Partner of the Year. The recognition was announced at the school system's annual Partners in Education Reception held on Wednesday, May 1 at the Newton County Board of Education. Newton County Chamber of Commerce President Hunter Hall announced the award.

House Bill 251 School Choice Information

After reviewing guidelines provided by the Georgia Department of Education, the Newton County School System has identified seven schools as potentially eligible to receive students whose parents wish to transfer their child under the provisions of House Bill 251. Those schools are: East Newton Elementary School; Heard-Mixon Elementary School; Livingston Elementary School; Mansfield Elementary School; Porterdale Elementary School; Clements Middle School; and Veterans Memorial Middle School. No slots are available at the district’s three high schools for the 2013-2014 school year.

Georgia Special Needs Scholarship

Under a state law passed by the Georgia State Legislature in 2007, parents/guardians of a student who receives special education services may choose to transfer their child to another public school or private school in Georgia. Information and forms for public school choice are posted on the Newton County website, www.newtoncountyschools.org, or you can call the Special Education Department at (770) 787-1330.

In order for a student to qualify for this scholarship, 1) the parent/guardian has been a Georgia resident for at least one year and currently resides within Georgia; 2) the student meets Georgia eligibility criteria for one or more disability areas; and 3) the student has spent the prior year in attendance at a Georgia public school and shall have had an Individual Education Program (IEP) written by the school in accordance with federal and state laws and regulations.

Application/Deadlines

• There will be two application deadlines for students eligible for a transfer to another school.

For the fall semester of the school year, parents have until July 1st, 2013, to request that

their child attend another school in the district.

For the spring semester of the school year, parents have until December 2nd, 2013, to

request that their child attend another school in the district.

• Parents may obtain forms on the website and submit the completed forms to the same

department by the designated deadline date.
