Dear Parents and Students,
While at Newton High School, students are in preparation for their postsecondary endeavors. The professional staff at Newton High works closely with students and parents in preparing and/or selecting a career path for each student, stressing the importance of successful completion of each student’s coursework. Postsecondary institutions examine the academic grade point average as well as standardized test scores in considering acceptance to their schools.
Newton High School has a plan in place to assist students’ growth and development in obtaining the highest possible test scores and successful completion of standardized tests.
The PSAT (the practice SAT) test is offered to sophomores, juniors, and freshmen enrolled in accelerated classes.
Counselors utilize the scores on the PSAT in assisting students in selecting either the ACT or SAT – whichever test is best suited to the student’s individual testing style. The PLAN and the PSAT are extremely valuable in predicting scores on the ACT and SAT. Students may prepare for the test that best suits their style by taking test preparation classes. Colleges, with few exceptions, accept either test that meet their admission standards.
The Georgia State Department of Education has recently purchased the Official SAT Online Course for all high school students. The course consists of 18 lessons, all available online. The course includes full SAT practice exams as well as essay preparation. This is a valuable resource for all students preparing to take the SAT. Typically, seniors and second semester juniors have received adequate coursework to prepare them for the SAT.
Students are encouraged to establish an online account with College Board and use the practice exams and essay preparation. Go to collegeboard.com/satonlinecourseschool. See your counselor to get the school code.
Students should select the best test for their testing style.
If you would like more information on the Official SAT Online Course or have questions, please contact your child’s counselor at 770-787-2250.
Sincerely,
