Clubs

Student involvement is one of the keys to a successful high school career.  Newton High School provides many organizations, allowing students the opportunity to develop social, environmental, artistic, physical, academic and athletic skills.  Listed below are some of the many extra-curricular opportunities available at Newton High School.  Come on....get involved - become a part of Newton High School's clubs and organizations!

Athletic Rules and Regulations

Listed below are the rules and regulations of the Newton High School Athletic Program.

I.     Eligibility -  To be eligible to participate each player must meet the following requirements:

A.   Academics

1.   All students athletes must have passed 5 units (subjects) on last year's 2nd semester report card  (70 is passing)

2.  Candidates must be on track. This means:
     a.  Freshmen must have passed 5 subjects last semester
     b.  Sophomores must have accumulated 3 units.
     c.  Juniors must have accumulated 9 units.
     d.  Seniors must have accumulated 15 units.

B.  Physical - Each student must pass the GHSA physical and it must be on file in his/her coach's office.

C.  Insurance  - Athletes must have school insurance or family coverage in order to participate.

D.  Parent Consent Forms - Parent consent form must be ob file in coach's office.  This form states that the parent has read the handout and has given the athlete permission to participate.

E.  Fall Workouts - All candidates for Varsity, J.V., and 9th grade teams must  begin practice at announced times and date if not already involved in a previous sport.

F.  Migrant Studies - A student may try out for one of our teams when he/she has registered at our school and is eligible.

G.  Having selected a sport, a student athlete shall not quit the program in season to try out for another sport or take part in an off-season program until the sport in season terminates.

II.  Team Conduct

A.  The Newton High School athlete must remember that he and his actions are representative not only of himself, but also the entire program, the school, and every other individual involved.  Any deviation from high standards of general conduct will necessitate disciplinary action. These standards apply to the classroom as well as the athletic program.  All players are to be respectful to all teachers and follow school rules.  Good sportsmanship is expected. Unsportsmanlike conduct will not be tolerated.

B.  Any rules violation can be dealt with at the discretion of the coach.  It is a privilege to participate on a team, and this privilege can be taken away anytime at the discretion of the coach.  Good sportsmanship is expected. Unsportsmanlike conduct will not be tolerated.

C.  Because of the time which must be committed to the team, athletes must not allow other activities, clubs, or jobs to interfere with athletic activities.  Only academics will come before athletics.

III.  General Guidelines

A.  Attendance  It is your responsibility if the practice schedule, attend, and be on time.  If you cannot attend or must be late, you must notify one of the coaches in advance.

1.  Excused Absences:  An absence in which the player has notified a coach before he misses and discussed valid reasons for the absence.  The coach will decide if the absence is excuse at this time.  If excused absences become excessive, dismissal may result.

2.  Unexcused Absences:  An absence from a practice or game that has not been approved by by the head coach. 
     a. 1st offense - discretion of the coach
     b. 2nd offense - discretion of the coach
     c. 3rd offense - cut from squad

B.  ISS/Suspension from school  Beginning one week prior to the first contest or event scheduled for any designated sport or extra curricular activity, students suspended out-of-school will be suspended from all activities (practices, playing, dressing out, sitting with the team. etc.) during each full day of suspension.  In the event that no designated game or activity takes place during period of suspension, students will miss the next game or activity scheduled during the season for that sport or activity.  Suspension ends when the student is physically readmitted to the classroom.  Students assigned to in-school     suspension will be suspended from the next appropriate game or event scheduled from the date they are assigned to (begin) ISS.  Students may practice with their team or organization when assigned to ISS. **Additional consequences may result as determined by the coach. 

C.  Transportation

1.  Practice - Players are expected to have transportation  to and from practice.  If this is not possible, see your coach.

2.  Games - Team members are expected to travel to and from away activities with the team.  Parents should contact coaches for exceptions in special circumstances.

IV.  Major Infractions - Violation of any of the following rules will result in immediate dismissal from the team.

A.  Rule 1 - Alcohol:  Selling of or attempting to sell, possession of, use of, or under the influence of alcohol on school property, or at any school event.

B.  Rule 05 - Drugs: Selling of or attempting to sell, possession of, use of, or under the influence of drugs on school property, or at any school event.

C.  Rule 39 - Assault  and/or Battery on School Employee:  Engaging in and assault on and/or battery of any school system employee on or off school property, if school related.  Touching, striking, pushing, or threatening the person, bodily or psychologically, and/or the property of any school system employee.

D.  Rule 84 Conduct Outside of School Hours or School Activities 
     A student who has committed any act off campus which is prohibited by the Georgia Code and is punishable as a felony or would be punishable as a felony if committed by an adult (regardless of  whether the student has been arrested, charged, or convicted with a crime) and whose presence at school is reasonably certain to endanger other students or staff or cause substantial disruption to the educational climate may be disciplined or excluded from school.

 

Clubs

AMICAE Junior Civitan Club (Sponsor: Lisa Oswald and  Diana Brown) - AMICAE is community service organization that focuses on helping the less fortunate and special needs individuals.

• Anchor Club (Sponsor: Theresa Shields) - This is an international service organization committed to improving the quality of life in the community. The primary focus is on helping individuals suffering from brain related disorders.

• Anime/Manga Club (Sponsor: Steven Slocumb) - The club explores Japanese culture by screening and discussing anime (Japanese cartoons and graphics). Past Activities: Monthly meetings, Halloween costume dance.

• Art Club (Sponsor: Ernestine Bailey) - The art club gives students more opportunity to develop their visual art skills and enhances their appreciation for classical art.

Band  Director of Bands: Jason A. Smith - Newton High School features the dynamic SOUND FACTORY Marching Band in the fall and the excellent concert & symphonic bands in the spring.

• BETA Club (Sponsor: Adele May) - The BETA club promotes character, develops leadership skills, encourages service involvement, and recognizes achievement.

• Creative Writing Club (Sponsor: Laurin Johnson) - The club is dedicated to improving student social skills/interactions, literary presentation techniques, and writing as means of a close study of a variety of fiction writing approaches.

• DECA (Sponsor: Julie Brand) - Membership is restricted to students with a career interest in marketing, hospitality, finance, sales, business administrations, and entrepreneurship. P

• Drama Club (Sponsor: Donna Sadow) - Club participants will have the opportunity to learn about all aspects of theatre production and performance. P

• Fellowship of Christian Athletes (Sponsor:Jamie Summerour) - FCA is an organizations of Christian students who meet and rejoice in their faith.

• Future Business Leaders of America - FBLA (Sponsor: Debra Lary, Ken Ondracek, & Germaine Brown) - FBLA is an educational association of students preparing for careers in business.

• Future Farmers' of America (Sponsor: Ryan Talton & Justin Bennett) - The mission of FFA is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for future leadership and career success.

• Health Occupations Students of America (Sponsor: ) - HOSA is a national student organization endorsed by the U.S. Department of Education. Its two-fold mission is to promote career opportunities in the healthcare industry.

• History Club (Sponsor: Rathan Kersey) - The club endeavors to enrich and enlighten the members through in depth study of history.

• Key Club (Sponsor: Shannon Buff) - Key Club is an international, student-led organization providing its members with opportunities to perform civic service, build character, and develop leadership.

• Sigma Lambda Chi - 4H (Sponsor: Elaine Kimble) - This is a community service club enables members to appreciate the advantages of helping others and preparing for adulthood.

• Student Council (Sponsor:Ryan Norman) - The purpose of the Student Council is to represent the student body in matters pertaining to Newton High School.

• Vocational Opportunities Clubs of America - VOCA (Sponsor: Jacqueline Pennington) - VOCA enables members to recognize and develop strong leadership skills. Members learn to plan, organize, and implement various leadership-related activities.
