EMERGENCY sCHOOL cLOSING - SEVERE WEATHER

In the case of severe weather (snow, ice, severe cold, etc.), the official announcement for school closing may be heard over the radio/TV stations below. Please listen to these stations instead of calling school officials. If announcements are not made before 7:00 a.m., parents/guardians should assume school will be in session as usual. Please make sure that we have a correct phone number in our system for Student Messenger calls. If you are not receiving phone messages from our Student Messenger system or have changed your phone number, please let Ms. Fleming in the main office know.

How are parents notified?

Once the decision has been made to cancel or delay school, that information is posted on the Newton County School System website. Check the scrolling box on the right side of the screen (NCSS News) for closing/delay information. In addition, the school system notifies the following metro-Atlanta television and radio stations:(top)

What do I do if school opening is delayed?

Should the Superintendent make the decision to delay the opening of school, buses would run their normal route two hours later than usually scheduled. School will begin classes two hours later than normal. No school breakfast will be served on these days.

What are the procedures for early dismissal?

If the weather should become severe during the school day, and school is going to be dismissed before 2:30 p.m., announcements of the school's closing will be made over the same radio/TV stations. If a child's parent/guardian is not at home, the child must know an alternate place to go in the event of an emergency school closing. Parents/guardians will be asked to complete a form to designate where each child should go if school closes early. (Remember, like any other day, buses run only their normal daily routes and cannot provide special transportation services on emergency closing days.) Please be sure to discuss emergency closing directions with each child. The child should know what is expected in these situations. Whenever possible, lunch will be served at school even if school is being released early.
