Quest
An Enrichment Program for Gifted Students
Instructor : Brenda Rolls

Program Description:
The Quest program serves gifted students in grades K-5. Students are taught challenging skills, concepts, and strategies that enhance and extend what they learn in the regular classroom. They participate in a variety of enriching activities that help them become better critical thinkers and problem solvers.

Program Models:
  • Resource Model (Grades K-3)
Students who qualify for gifted services attend the gifted resource class one day each week.

  • Cluster Model (Grades 4-5)
Students are placed (clustered) in an accelerated Language Arts class taught by a gifted endorsed teacher. This instruction takes place every day. Students also attend the gifted resource class for a few hours one day each week.

Schedule:
Monday - 1st Grade
Tuesday - 3rd Grade
Wednesday - 2nd Grade
Thursday - 4th Grade
Friday - 5th Grade

Curriculum:
  • Curriculum:
Inventors and Inventions: The primary focus of our curriculum combines both science and social studies as we learn about inventors and inventions. Each class will be participating in many activities that will help students better understand the impact inventions have on our society. They will see that many inventions have been improved to better meet our needs. The children will become aware of many inventors, including women and minorities, that have played a significant role in solving problems that affect most people. Students will also be using the inventive process to create their own inventions.

  • Vocabulary:
Another component of the curriculum is vocabulary. The children have the opportunity to learn many new words that are derived from Latin and Greek. These words improve and broaden their vocabulary while providing them with the necessary skills required for figuring out the meanings of unknown words.

  • Logic and Critical Thinking:
Gifted students are taught how to become better problem-solvers and critical-thinkers. They are given many opportunities to develop logic skills as they learn to “think outside the box”. At times, they are given challenging scenarios where they must work together to solve a problem. The students enjoy learning new strategies that better enable them to find new solutions to problems they encounter in every day life.
The Quest curriculum is based on the state standards and learning objectives called the Georgia Performance Standards (GPS). These establish instructional guidelines and set goals for teaching and learning.
