Accelerated Reader Guidelines
STAR Test and Reading Range
· The STAR test will be given a minimum of two (2) times a year: once in August and once in January. The STAR test will calculate a reading range for each student based on their performance on the test.
Reading Goals
· After each class has taken the STAR test and the students’ reading range has been determined, the teacher will work with each student to determine their individual point goal.
· Part of their goal is a comprehension goal. Each student’s comprehension goal will be a minimum of 85%. This goal is school-wide.
· The third part of a students' goal is their book level goal. This is the bottom number of the students' reading range.
· Students must meet their point goal, comprehension goal, and book level goal to be considered as having “met” their goal for the quarter.
A.R. Tests
· Students may check out A.R. books from the school or the public library and take tests on the A.R. books that they read.
· In order to check out books in the media center, the student must have their library pass which contains their reading level (dot color) on it.
· Students may take tests in the morning before announcements, during any “free” time they have when their work is completed, during computer lab time, or in the media center throughout the day.
· A.R. books that students read may be recorded on their classroom reading logs and count toward their 100 book reading goal.
Rewards/Incentives
· When a student meets their goal, their name will be called on the morning show, and they will be recognized on the wall outside of the media center.
· The A.R. store will be held quarterly. Each student who earns at least one point in a quarter will be allowed to come and “shop” on the designated day. They will receive a slip letting them know how many points they have to spend.
· An A.R. party will be held quarterly. Only students who meet their goal (point, book level and comprehension) will be allowed to attend the party.
· At the end of the year, students who have met their A.R. goal (points, book level, and comprehension) for the 3rd and 4th quarter will attend a school wide carnival.
