Porterdale Elementary, a school of approximately 450 pre-kindergarten through fifth grade students, has served the Porterdale community for over thirty years.
Focused Curriculum
At Porterdale Elementary, the curriculum is built around the needs of the broad range of students it serves. The curriculum strives to ensure the mastery of basic skills with an emphasis on math and language arts. Learning Focused instructional strategies are utilized to optimize the use of current research and methodology within our classrooms.
The language arts program focuses on providing increased opportunities for the practice of skills within the instructional day. Porterdale was the recipient of a $500,000 Reading First Grant for the academic years 2004 - 2007. We are very excited about the opportunities this grant continues to provide to improve our students' achievement. The mathematics program uses a spiral sequencing in the teaching of basic skills. Science and social studies curriculums are interwoven with reading and math skills in an effort to provide an instructional environment that will better prepare the individual child to succeed in today's interconnected and interdependent world. Music, art and physical education programs provide opportunities to develop skills and attitudes that are needed to be healthy, responsible citizens in the new millennium.
Technology Plan
Porterdale Elementary has IBM compatible computers with Internet access in every classroom. Internet access combined with curriculum-related, Microsoft networked programs provide students with many opportunities to develop their communication skills using today's technology. Each classroom is also equipped to receive closed-circuit television broadcasts. We continue to have several portable laptop computer labs which are available to all classrooms. This lab will allow the time needed for project based instruction. In addition, we have two portable Ipad cards available for classroom use.
Porterdale Elementary students also receive weekly instruction in our computer lab. Students are provided instruction in keyboarding, curriculum enhancing software usage, and on-line research. Our commitment is to provide instruction in the growing technical skills which help ensure students' success in the future.
Community Partnership
Porterdale Elementary is located in a growing, involved community. This presents many unique opportunities for partnerships with local businesses and community service organizations. The contributions and perspectives of the community are vital to the quality of the school. An active Parent Teacher Organization and the involvement of our Partners in Education greatly enhance the educational experience of all Porterdale students. Students at Porterdale Elementary utilize these partnerships to both learn from and offer assistance to their local community.
