Welcome To
Sharp Learning Center

Students and parents are valued team members and are encouraged to participate in the implementation of the vision of Sharp Learning Center .  Our vision is to modify behavior that needs changing, and to improve the academic standing of all students.

Our purpose is to prepare students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to think independently, to make responsible decisions, to appreciate and enjoy life, and to solve problems in order to meet future challenges.

At
Sharp Learning Center we are committed to providing the core curriculum and self-discipline in a safe, nurturing, and risk-free environment.  Students are asked to perform at optimum capacity behaviorally and academically.  We hope students' experiences here will be meaningful and life changing.  The administration, faculty, and staff look forward to working with all our parents and students.

We want to assure parents and students that with your cooperation, and the commitment of the administration, faculty, and staff, our students will grow academically, socially, and emotionally.

Mission

The mission of Sharp Learning Center is to facilitate students’ successful transitions.

Vision

As educators, we envision students becoming life-long learners and productive citizens of society, through coaching, counseling, communicating and character education.

Opportunities Offered

Sharp Learning Center serves as the home to Newton County 's Alternative Education Program.   The center serves students in grades six through twelve who have been placed in the program for behavioral, academic, and parenting reasons.

Referrals to the program can be made by the base school, social worker, service agencies (such as Juvenile Court, Mental Health, Department of Family and Children Services), the Disciplinary Hearing Tribunal, or Rainbow Lake School .  A placement committee comprised of representatives of the base school, social work division, agency group, and Sharp Learning Center review each case and recommends placement in the program. The student and parent/guardian must sign a contract for placement at Sharp Learning Center .  An interim placement may be made in a crisis situation.  In such cases, a placement committee reviews the status of any interim placement.

The curriculum is composed of the essential state required courses of language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, and self-discipline.  These Georgia Performance Standards (GPS) based courses include hands-on activities, real life application skills, and computer/laser disk instruction.

High School students who meet the eligibility requirements have a unique opportunity to earn college credit while attending high school.  Students who pass the college placement exams can enroll in a semester long course in Customer Service.  This course is offered through DeKalb Technical College , and certifies students as Customer Service Specialists.  This certification will enable students to seek gainful employment in the community should they so desire.
