Media Center Mission:

The mission of the West Newton Elementary School library media program is to enable our students and staff to become lifelong readers and users of information. The media program also aims to support and enrich the curriculum provided at West Newton Elementary.

 

Media Center Information

Hours

The media center is open to students from 7:10 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.

Circulation

  • West Newton Elementary has an automated circulation system.
  • First Grade students may check out one book at a time for two weeks.
  • Second through Fifth Grade students may check out two books at a time for two weeks.
  • Students must return any overdue books before checking out more books.
  • Reference books are to be used in the Media Center.

Lost or Damaged Books

  • Students must pay $10 to replace a lost library book that is hard cover & $5 to replace a paperback book.
  • Students who return damaged books will be charged an amount depending on the type of damage.

News Broadcast

Each morning West Newton Elementary’s fifth grade students present a news broadcast from the Media Center Studio.

 

 

Accelerated Reader

is a great tool to measure reading comprehension.

 

Renaissance Home Connect allows parents and students to access Overall progress in Quizzes, Points and Book Level as well as the student's last Quiz.

Parents may also specify up to six email addresses to receive automatic updates on their student's progress.

The AR BookFinder makes it easy to search for the next AR book to read.

The Bookshelf link enables you to view all the books the student has read. By clicking on a book cover you can get details on the book such as book level, work count, points, and more.

Students should login in with their username and password.

     American Memory Collection - Collections of primary source and archival material relating to American culture and history. Topics include: Today in History, the Learning Page, African American, Civil War, Conservation Movement, Continental Congress, Architectural History, Early Motion Pictures, Woman Suffrage, the papers of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln plus others. Ben's Guide to U.S. Government A link to government resources about citizenship; organized by age levels.
 

Biography in Context
Illustrated biographies searchable by name, profession, title, place or origin, gender, race/ethnicity, title of work, date of birth, date of death. 

  Britannica Elementary
General encyclopedia for elementary students. Features include a world atlas, timeline, feature of the day, and animal of the day.

 

Children’s Storybooks Online has a great selection illustrated story book for children of all ages.

Starfall is a great resource that motivates children to learn how to read. 

 

     Kids Zone is a free website that gives students the opportunity to win points by taking quizzes on the books they have read.  They will then be able to spend the points on various prizes.
