Newton County Schools Join Nationwide Celebration of Afterschool Programs for Lights On Afterschool

Newton County After School Academic Programs will join more than one million people across the nation in celebrating the annual Lights On Afterschool, a nationwide event that highlights the importance of afterschool programs in keeping kids safe, helping them succeed in school, and supporting working families.
This year’s event slated for October 23rd will feature student performances, parent engagement activities, STEM demonstrations, art exhibits, fall festivals, and cooking demonstrations. Families, school staff, and community members are invited to join us at any elementary school beginning at 3:00 p.m., middle school beginning at 5:00 p.m., and Alcovy or Eastside high schools beginning at 4:00 p.m.
“Afterschool programs are more than just a safe space for children—they provide critical opportunities for learning, exploration, and growth,” said Deena J. Sams, Director of Afterschool and Community Affairs. “Lights On Afterschool is our chance to shine a spotlight on the amazing work our students and staff do every day, and to celebrate the community partnerships that make it possible.”
Organized by the Afterschool Alliance, Lights On Afterschool is the only nationwide event celebrating afterschool programs and their role in the lives of children, families, and communities. Across the country, more than 8,000 events will showcase how afterschool programs support academic achievement, provide healthy snacks and meals, expose students to new opportunities, and inspire them to reach their full potential.
Afterschool programs also provide a vital lifeline for working parents. Studies show that parents with children in afterschool programs are less stressed, more productive, and have greater peace of mind knowing their children are safe and engaged in learning.
The event is free and open to the public. To learn more about Lights On Afterschool and how you can support afterschool programs in our community, visit https://www.afterschoolalliance.org.
