Basketball Safety EnhancementsNewton County Schools (NCS) is enhancing its commitment to student and community safety by expanding security protocols at district athletic events. In addition to the existing safety measures at Sharp Stadium, weapons detection systems and the district’s clear bag policy will now be implemented at all varsity girls and boys basketball games beginning this season.

The Newton County Board of Education has made significant investments in advanced security technology to help ensure that students, families, and community members can enjoy school events in a safe and welcoming environment. These enhancements build on the district’s ongoing efforts to promote safety across all campuses and event venues.

Weapons Detection Systems at Basketball Events
Weapons detection systems—already in use at football games—will now be utilized at the entrances of all varsity basketball games. These systems are designed to allow for quick, efficient screening while helping prevent prohibited items from entering sporting venues. Staff members will be on-site to assist with the screening process and support smooth entry for spectators.

Clear Bag Policy Expanded to Basketball Games
To further streamline entry and support safety efforts, the clear bag policy currently in place for Sharp Stadium will also apply to varsity basketball events.

Permitted bags include:
• Clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC bags only

Not permitted:
• Bookbags, purses, clutches, diaper bags, camera bags, and any non-clear bags
• Bags made from materials other than clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC

Supervision Requirement for Younger Students
As part of the district’s continued emphasis on safety, students under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a supervising adult to enter the stadium and gymnasium facilities. High school students cannot serve as substitutes for supervising adults.

Superintendent Dr. Duke Bradley emphasized the importance of these enhanced measures.

“These steps reflect our district’s commitment to keeping students, staff, and visitors safe,” said Dr. Bradley. “Our community has voiced strong support for expanding safety measures at athletic events, and we are proud to respond with solutions that protect our schools while still allowing families to enjoy the energy and excitement of high school athletics.”

NCS recognizes that community support plays a powerful role in motivating students both on and off the field. These enhanced safety measures are designed to ensure that athletic events continue to be positive, enjoyable experiences for all.
