Weather Update-January 22

Newton County Schools Weather Update-January 22, 2026
Posted on 01/22/2026
Winter Weather As you may be aware, Governor Brian Kemp has declared a state of emergency for parts of north Georgia due to impending inclement weather. While the most significant impacts are currently forecasted for north Georgia, there is a possibility that this weather system could expand into metro Atlanta, including Newton County.

Event Cancellations
Out of an abundance of caution, all Newton County Schools athletic events scheduled for Saturday are canceled, including all district-hosted events. In addition, our students will not participate in any out-of-district athletic events on Saturday.

Current forecasts indicate that the storm may impact our area Saturday and Sunday, with the potential for lingering effects into Monday or Tuesday. Be assured that district leaders are closely monitoring the situation and will remain in regular communication with county and state officials. This collaboration will guide our decision-making and ensure timely communication with our families and staff.

Looking ahead, should there be any impact to school operations on Monday, January 26, we hope to make an announcement Sunday evening between 6:00 and 7:00 p.m. Families will be notified through the district’s automated calling system. Updates will also be shared on the Newton County Schools website, www.newtoncountyschools.org, as well as on our Facebook and X social media channels.

Stay Safe
We hope all members of our community remain safe. Consistent with warnings that have been shared by our local government and public safety officials, we encourage all residents to stay off roadways unless absolutely necessary, ensure vehicles have adequate fuel, charge all phones, protect all exposed pipes, stock your kitchen with nonperishable food, and check on elders in your area.

Newton County Schools encourages families to continue monitoring district communications, our website, social media, and local media outlets for the latest information. Thank you for your continued partnership as we prioritize the safety of our students and staff.
