Newton County Schools is proud to announce that Newton High School senior Brennon Blount was selected for the highly competitive Georgia All-State Chorus, one of the most prestigious choral honors in the nation.
Each year, more than 7,000 students in grades 7–12 audition for All-State Chorus through a rigorous two-step process. Students must first perform a prepared choral art song, evaluated on diction, pitch accuracy, dynamics, phrasing, vocal technique, and more. They must also demonstrate advanced sightreading skills, performing multiple musical excerpts with minimal preparation. Only the top students advance, and ultimately, approximately 2,400 are selected statewide to participate in the elite ensemble under the direction of nationally recognized conductors.
Blount’s selection marked the second time he earned this honor, having previously been chosen during his sophomore year. Achieving All-State recognition as an upperclassman is especially competitive, making his accomplishment even more noteworthy.
“Being selected for All-State Chorus is an immaculate honor I do not take for granted,” said Blount. “It is proof of the vigorous work I have put in and represents the development to where I am today.”
Blount described his reaction to the news as both relief and excitement. “After relief, I was overjoyed to be a part of a community where I could collaborate and engage with students who share the same musical caliber,” he said.
A dedicated and versatile vocalist, Blount performs primarily as a tenor, though he also sings soprano as a countertenor. His passion for music began at an early age and has continued to grow through years of commitment and preparation, including weekly rehearsals and independent practice.
“I most enjoy the feeling of producing melodies through the voice,” Blount shared. “And when those sounds come together in a choir, the result is something truly special.”
Blount credits much of his success to the support and mentorship of Newton High School Choral Director Johnny Edwards.
“My number one supporter is my music teacher, Mr. Edwards,” said Blount. “He has been there for me since day one and has always pushed me to grow as a musician.”
Edwards praised Blount’s dedication, talent, and character.
“Brennon is an exceptional musician whose work ethic and passion for choral music set him apart,” said Edwards. “He approaches every rehearsal and performance with a level of focus and commitment that is rare. Beyond his talent, he is a collaborative and encouraging leader among his peers, and I am incredibly proud to see him recognized at the state level.”
Blount was the only student representing Newton High School at this year’s All-State Chorus, a responsibility he embraced with pride.
“Standing for Newton means being an example of excellence and resilience,” he said. “I wanted to represent our school and community in a way that showed I was willing to learn, take chances, and contribute positively.”
As a senior, Blount reflected on his final year in high school chorus with both gratitude and anticipation for what lies ahead.
“The feeling is bittersweet,” he said. “I am proud of how far I’ve come, and while I will miss these experiences, I know there are even greater opportunities ahead.”
Following graduation, Blount plans to attend Columbus State University, where he intends to major in music education and continue pursuing his passion for singing.
