During its June 30, 2026, Special Called Meeting, the Newton County Board of Education approved multiple leadership appointments as recommended by Superintendent Dr. Duke Bradley.
Interim Chief of Learning and Leadership
Last month, Chief of Learning and Leadership, Tracy Blackburn, who had served in that position for two years, accepted the superintendent’s position with the Jasper County School System. Dr. Bradley recommended that she be replaced on an interim basis by current Executive Director of High School Leadership, Dr. Shannon Buff.
"We are grateful for Tracy's service and leadership during her time with Newton County Schools," said Superintendent Dr. Duke Bradley. "She has made meaningful contributions to our students, staff, and schools, and we wish her continued success as she begins this exciting new opportunity in Jasper County."
Oak Hill Elementary School
The Board also approved the direct appointment of Ms. Kimberlee Sorrell to principal of Oak Hill Elementary School. She currently serves as principal of Fairview Elementary School. Ms. Sorrell replaced longstanding principal, Dr. Brenda Gammans, who announced her retirement earlier in the year.
Fairview Elementary School
To fill the vacancy created by Ms. Sorrell's transfer, the Board approved the appointment of Dr. Ember Lumpkin to principal of Fairview Elementary School.
Dr. Lumpkin has served as an assistant principal in Newton County Schools since 2021, first at West Newton Elementary School and most recently at South Salem Elementary School. Dr. Lumpkin holds a Doctor of Education degree, an Education Specialist degree, a Master of Social Work, and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, all from the University of Georgia.
Dr. Bradley said these appointments reflect the district's commitment to developing and promoting strong educational leaders.
"Leadership matters, and each of these individuals has demonstrated a deep commitment to students, staff, and continuous improvement," said Dr. Bradley. "While we are grateful for Tracy Blackburn's many contributions to Newton County Schools, we are also excited about the talented leaders stepping into these new roles. Dr. Buff, Ms. Sorrell, and Dr. Lumpkin bring a wealth of experience, proven leadership, and a strong understanding of our district. I am confident they will continue building upon the strong foundation already in place and help advance our mission of educational excellence for all students."
