Two Governor's Honors FinalistsNewton County Schools is proud to announce that Adriana Drain and Anthony Miller, students at both Alcovy High School and the Newton College & Career Academy STEM Institute, have been named finalists for the 2025 Governor’s Honors Program (GHP). Both are sophomores and will represent the district in this highly competitive summer academic program.

Drain was selected in the area of social studies, while Miller was chosen for engineering with a focus on electrical and computational studies.

The Georgia Governor’s Honors Program is a residential summer experience for rising juniors and seniors who demonstrate exceptional ability and interest in a specific area of study. This year’s program will be held June 15 through July 12, 2025, on the campus of Georgia Southern University.

Designed to provide enrichment beyond the traditional classroom, GHP includes in-depth academic instruction during the day and a variety of social and learning activities in the evenings. The program is fully funded by the state, including meals and housing.

To be selected, students must go through a rigorous application and interview process, demonstrating both knowledge and passion in their chosen field. Nominees are considered in a range of subjects, including communicative arts, world languages, mathematics, science, social studies, dance, music, theater, visual arts, engineering, and agriscience.

“We are incredibly proud of Adriana and Anthony for earning a place among Georgia’s most promising students,” said Ms. Tracy Blackburn, Chief of Learning and Leadership for Newton County Schools. “Their selection as GHP finalists reflects not only their academic strengths, but also their commitment to growth and excellence. We know they will represent our district well.”
