The Alcovy High School Athletic Department is excited to announce the appointment of Kareem Hayes as the new head baseball coach. Coach Hayes has been playing baseball since the age of eight. Coach Hayes is a 2008 graduate of Berkmar High School in Lilburn, Ga in Gwinnett. He was a three-year varsity starter and letterman on the school’s baseball team. Coach Hayes attended and played one year of baseball at Central Methodist University in Fayette, MO (2009-2010) and played three years baseball at Albany State University in Albany, GA (2010-2013). He received a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Health Physical Education and Recreation, while at Albany State in 2013. Coach Hayes also received a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Health and Physical Education from Georgia State University in 2018.
Coach Hayes has many years of experience coaching baseball. He began his coaching career at Berkmar High School in 2013 and served as Varsity baseball assistant and JV head baseball coach. He then moved to Discovery High School in 2015, where he served as Varsity baseball assistant head coach. He landed his first varsity head coaching position at Morrow High School and led them from 2018-2021. In 2021, Coach Hayes joined the Alcovy High School baseball team where he served as Varsity baseball assistant coach and JV head baseball coach for the 2021-22 season.
Alcovy High School Athletic Director, Thomas Lowe stated, “Coach Hayes brings a wealth of baseball knowledge and experience to our football program”.
He added, “His mild temperament and likeness by the players will make the transition a very smooth one”. Lowe went on state that “Coach Hughes, the former head baseball coach, was extremely supportive of moving Coach Hayes to head baseball coach.
Coach Hayes has articulated that he looks forward to continuing to build off of the great success of the baseball program from this past season of making the state playoffs. He wants to continue to build great young men on the field, in the classroom, and in the community.
