Newton County Schools (NCS) is proud to announce Ms. Chandra Mitchell, Administrative Assistant and Records Clerk for the NCSS Special Education Department, as the district’s 2025 HERO of the Year. Mitchell received the honor at the school district’s inaugural HERO Awards Ceremony on April 1, 2025, at the Porter Performing Arts Center.
“I’m speechless,” said Mitchell after the event. “I give all glory to God. I am overwhelmed. I thank God for endeavoring me in this school system for 30 years. I thank God for the job I do in the community because if it wasn’t for God this would not be possible. My favorite scripture is, ‘I can do all things through Christ Jesus who strengthens me’ and I can do all things.”
The HERO Awards program was created to celebrate classified employees who go above and beyond in supporting the success and well-being of Newton County’s students. From the classroom to transportation, technology to nutrition, these employees form the foundation of daily school operations.
“Chandra Mitchell exemplifies the heart of Newton County Schools,” said Superintendent Dr. Duke Bradley. “Her compassion, professionalism, and quiet leadership inspire those around her. She is deeply deserving of this recognition, and we are proud to honor her as our first HERO of the Year.”
The HERO Awards program reflects a Newton County Board of Education priority to increase recognition for all school system employees. Each school and division nominated one classified employee to represent their team this year. From this group of outstanding individuals, Chandra Mitchell was selected as the district-wide winner. She will also represent NCSS in the 2025 Georgia RISE (Recognizing Inspirational School Employees) Awards.
“I will represent Newton County Schools to my fullest,” said Mitchell. “I just love Newton County.”
Board Chair Abigail Coggin noted, “Recognizing the contributions of our classified staff through the HERO Awards is a wonderful opportunity to show our gratitude. These individuals are vital to the success of our students, and we are thrilled to celebrate their dedication and impact. We congratulate Ms. Mitchell and each of our HEROES for their outstanding service, compassion, and the meaningful difference they make in the lives of our students every day.”
