Newton County Schools (NCS) Substitute Teacher Application Process for the 2024-2025 School Year

Application Period: August through March

To join the pool of qualified substitute teachers, you must meet one of the following criteria:
1. Hold a current teaching certificate issued by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GA PSC) or

2. Be eligible for a GA PSC teaching certificate or

3. Hold a Substitute Teacher certificate of completion from the Griffin RESA (Regional Education Service Agency) Substitute Training Workshop.

If you meet the criteria above, you are exempt from attending Substitute Training. However, you must complete the following steps (steps 2-5 are completed after training):

1. Online Application: Apply to the “Substitute Teacher Training” job posting.

2. Required Documents: Submit the necessary "Substitute Required Documents." Visit our website for the full list.

3. Fingerprinting Appointment: Schedule an appointment for fingerprinting. You must be a certified teacher. Email Ms. Crowder at [email protected] with your GA PSC certificate number to receive the scheduling link.

4. Fingerprinting and Payroll Packet: At your fingerprinting appointment, complete the payroll packet and return the 1/2-day observation form. Bring two forms of ID (acceptable forms: a current Driver’s license OR passport, and a social security card). Fingerprinting is by appointment only, Monday through Thursday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. No walk-ins.

5. Long-term Substitute Vacancies: If you have a teaching certificate and are not under contract, contact the Human Resources Department for information regarding long-term substitute teaching vacancies and eligibility.

If you do not meet the above criteria, follow these steps:

1. Online Application: Apply to the “Substitute Teacher” job posting.

2. Training Registration: Register for training via Eventbrite to attend NCS training (link sent to all applicants approximately one week prior to training) or register for Griffin RESA's substitute training.

3. Complete Training: Successfully complete via substitute training offered by Newton County Schools or Griffin RESA.

4. Transcript Submission: Request and submit an official transcript for the highest level of education completed. Use Parchment Services for secure transcript orders, and have transcripts sent directly to [email protected]. No unofficial transcripts or hand-delivered transcripts will be accepted.

5. School Observation: Schedule and complete a ½ day - full day school observation and have the principal sign the Observation Form (for Griffin RESA training, pick up the form from HR).

6. Fingerprinting Appointment: After the observation, schedule a fingerprinting appointment. If you attended Griffin RESA training, email a copy of your certificate to Ms. Crowder at [email protected] for the scheduling link. For NCS training, the link will be sent via a follow-up email post-training.

7. Fingerprinting and Payroll Packet: At your fingerprinting appointment, complete the payroll packet and return the 1/2-day observation form. *Retired NCSS teachers with a teaching certificate that work in a long-term teaching assignment can earn $165 a day

**Certified teachers that accept a long-term teaching assignment can earn $150
