Out-Of-Zone Requests

The Newton County School System assigns students to schools based on established attendance zones in accordance with Board Policy JBCC (Student Assignment). While students are expected to attend their zoned school, the district provides an opportunity for families and employees to request consideration for assignment to a school outside of their designated zone through the out-of-zone request process.

In alignment with Board policy, these requests are accepted only during designated application windows established annually by the Superintendent or designee and are subject to applicable state law, district procedures, and available capacity.

Annual Application Timeline

Applications are only accepted during the published timeline. Requests submitted outside of these dates will not be considered, and applicants must wait until the next application cycle during the next school year’s application window.

Attendance and Code of Conduct Expectations

Students approved for out-of-zone placement are expected to maintain regular and punctual attendance and to abide by all disciplinary rules outlined in the Code of Conduct.

Applications for school transfer can be denied if the student has a history of attendance or Code of Conduct violations, defined as:

  • Any combination of ten (10) or more unexcused tardies, checkouts, or absences in an academic year; or
  • Code of Conduct violations - four (4) or more In-School Suspensions, or 2 Out-of-School Suspension in an academic year.

A student’s approval for transfer may be revoked by the department responsible for student transfers if attendance or Code of Conduct violations (as defined above) occur at the requested school and the student will be expected to immediately enroll in the school of their residence.

Important Reminders

  • Out-of-zone requests are accepted only during the designated application windows.

  • Approved requests are valid for one school year only and must be renewed annually.
  • Students must maintain consistent attendance, punctuality, and appropriate behavior to retain approval.
